英語で、〜するしかない は Have no choice but to〜と表せます。noの後ろですから複数形にしがちですがここは単数形なのがポイントです。choiceの代わりにoptionと言ってもOK。単に「こうするしかない」と言いたいときには、"This is the only choice" と言えばよいです。
障害のある男性 a man with a disability
36歳の障害者の男性が、自治会の役員に障害のことを無理やり書かされて自殺した。男性の両親は同会と役員に２５００万円を求める訴えを大阪地裁で起こした。
A man with a disability, who was 36 years old committed suicide after he was forced to write about his disability by members of the residents’ association. His parents sued the association and its members for 25 million yen in the Osaka District Court.
英語で、障害のある男性 は a man with a disability と表せます。また、障害者について話すとき、handicapやchallengedといった単語を使うこともできます。身体障害者であれば、a physically challenged person, 知的障害者であれば a mentally challenged person といった具合です。
中傷 abuse
岩手県におけるＣＯＶＩＤ-１９の最初の患者が中傷の対象になっている。県はそれに対して厳しい処分を下すとしている。男性の検査結果を発表した会社には何度も電話があり、苦情を言いに事務所を訪れる人もいたという。
The first patient of COVID-19 in Iwate has been a target of abuse. The prefecture is going to take strict action to it. The company that announced the man’s test result received a number of calls, and some people even visited the office to complain about it.
英語で、中傷 は abuse と表せます。abuseという単語を初めて学ぶときは、「虐待」という訳で覚える人も多いと思いますが、嫌がらせという共通の意味で、中傷という訳もあてられます。Call A names というフレーズを使って「Aの悪口を言う」というふうに言い換えることもできます。Call me names で、私の悪口を言う です。Call my names ではありません。ちなみにいじめは bullying と言い、いじめっ子はbullyと言います。
命令を出す issue an order
ドナルド・トランプ大統領は、中国の動画共有アプリ「TikTok」を禁止するという。1日に禁止するための命令を出すという。
President Donald Trump says he will ban TikTok, which is a Chinese video-sharing app. He is going to issue an order to ban it on the 1st.
英語で、命令を出す は issue an order と表せます。issueもorderも、異なる複数の意味をもち、しかもそれぞれが頻繁に使われる重要単語ですよね。それぞれの単語について2つ以上の意味を言えないという場合はこの機会に辞書で引いてみましょう。例えば health issue は健康問題、the date of issueは発行年月日、place an orderは注文をする、plane A in orderはAを順番に並べる ですね。
象の牙 tusk
ボツワナは、同国のゾウの大量死は、自然界に由来する毒が関係している可能性があると述べた。死体にはまだ牙が残っていたため、密猟によるものではないと主張した。
Botswana said the massive mortality of elephants in the country might have something to do with poison that originated in nature. They insisted that it was not from poaching because the dead bodies still had tusks.
英語で 象の牙 は tusk といいます。猪などにも使います。大きな牙ですね。一方で犬や狼などの小さな牙はfangと言います。このあたりをしっかり言い分けられるかどうかで
英語力がわかります。ちなみに人間の八重歯は a double toothと言います。親知らずはa wisdom toothです。
〜で作られている be made of ~
鞄メーカーの土屋カバンがスイカ専用の革製鞄を作った。内側には豚のスエードを使用しており、柔らかく、果物を取り出しやすいように工夫されています。六本木店と渋谷店で展示されます。

英語で 〜で作られている は be made of ~で表せます。似た表現で be made from~ がありますが、一応、be made from~ は、cheese is made from milk など、物が質的に変化する場合に使われるというルールみたいなものがあります。Cheeseとmilkはもはや全く別のものですよね。一方、leather bagは、pig suedeを縫い合わせて作ったものなので、質的には変化していませんよね。fromだから別のもの、ofだから同じものと覚えましょう。大学入試などであればこの辺はおさえるべきかもしれませんが、be made of の方がよく見ますし、どっちかわからなくなったらとりあえず be made of と言えば通じます。
